Hi! This seems like a good friendly place to unpack my little store of WD lore. I'm very happy to have run across this site!

I'm a Classical Scholar, have done a lot of poetry, performance, Jung, etc. I have a book out (on the shelf at Harvard's Widener!) on an art-collector who bought Classical Greek Art and shipped it to Boston, as a legacy for future generations of "sexually disoriented" youth. (My term.) Cuz apparently there was NOTHING in the Boston of the 1880's which could "explain" those curious dreams young men sometimes have. I have always been fascinated with the "Holy Boy Imago," that which is discussed in Plato's Phaedros, which I am recording. Though when discussing the HBI in a context like WDF, it's pretty obvious where I first made my acquaintance with it!

When I was working at the UCSD bookstore in the 1980's, Michael Meade (The Water of Life) a Men's Movement guy, laid it down as a challenge to us: boys go through tremendous physchic upheaval when they first start having WD, and no one in America has the courage to assemble groups to discuss this, lest they be called a perv. But unless they have a place to bring all their newfound psychic developments, it all gets wasted. And that challenge has always stuck with me. I have worked at the YMCA as a lifeguard, and it was good fun, but what was originally a real American "Temple of Apollo" (I.e., a place where young dudes could talk about young dude issues) is now pretty much just another gym, sad to say. Though the more you read of the YMCA's history, the more interesting it is. My grandfather also worked there.

I am directing a play IN LATIN this Spring, Seneca's Phaedra (no relation to Plato's Phaedros, except that the names are similar.) and so I need to keep my wits about me for the next 93 days. So this will be a perfect time to begin a WD log.

The Dream-Quest of Unkown Kadath is, of course, the title of wonderful H. P. Lovecraft story. I am editing one of the mysterious 17th. C. manuscripts referred to over and over again in HPL, as part of the creepy "scholarly" atmosphere. NO! NOT THE NECRONOMICON! Though it does have plenty of references to devils and devil-worship. Apparently this figure well known from the Salem witch-trials left behind a 4,500 page manuscript when he died, and somehow it falls to me to handle the Greek, Latin and Hebrew of it!

I have many WD stories to tell, both of misadventures of the innocent Boy Scout days, and then, later, as a young man, very deliberately focussing my spiritual energies as we do here, with very interesting results.

Research Questions. Pardon my dorkiness, but there are some very serious questions I do want to look into, or encourage others who have a better "Social Science" background to look into. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the curious young fellows here go on to such scientific careers.

Relationship between gender of first WD object and eventual object choice. Contrariwise, if you have dreams about guys, then how do you switch over to liking girls? It seems like a major design flaw to me, or at least it did when I was 13.

NON explicitly sexual imagery in WD. Spurting fountains, bicycles, roller-coasters, etc.

Role of traditional narrative on masculine identity formation for adolescent males.

(As a traditional story-teller, I have a pretty good idea of when and how story-telling works; but I throw that rubric up there to be a part of the scientific community.)

I might also mention literary treatements of WD: Dickey's Deliverance, Cabell's Figures of Earth, in the witch-craft panic days, Horace, etc.

Well, I'm rambling as I usually do. Looking forward to having TONS of extra energy to work out and get stuff written; it's nice knowing in advance what the effects of committing to a regimen will be.

Having a full beard nowadays, I can chuckle at the little'uns who don't now HOW or WHY to NOTMB.

DISCIPLINE CHART.

I made this handy discipline chart for myself a few years ago. You should be able to download it.

I call it the "WWW: Weight, Wanking and Work-outs" chart.

The paradox of male discipline is that no matter how much I love eating, wanking, and laying around doing nothing, I love being trim and fit and having WD EVEN MORE! This is hard to communicate to younger dudes. "You mean I CAN'T XYZ?" No, it's more about the fact that YOU CAN CHOOSE to experience ABC, instead of XYZ. I'm speaking as someone who used to teach in a Christian HS.

Here are the rules, which I worked out for myself based on my own discipline interests. You will of course adjust for your own program. Print out a bunch of sheets like this and tape them on your bedroom wall. Put month and year in the top left hand corner.
1) Every morning weigh yourself and note that.
2) For EVERY FULL DAY OF AB YOU CAN LOOK BACK ON that you haven't MB, you get an abstinence number. Example: If you MB at noon on Monday, then you can't count yourself for a "1" until WEDNESDAY MORNING. The "1" is for a FULL DAY OF ABSTINENCE on Tuesday. I don't buy into the "24 hr period" thing, I think it has to be about establishing a STEADY DAILY RHYTHM.
The stationary store I go to had packs of stars in Red, Silver, Blue and Gold, so I came up with this system to star myself for AB:
For AB days #1-3, you get to put up a RED star on that day.
For AB days #3-6, you get to put up a SILVER star
For AB days #7-9, you get to put up a BLUE star.
For AB days #10+, you get to put up a GOLD star.

Naturally you will not use the stars in the packet evenly, but that's life. Those who have been around the block with AB will recognize there are QUALITATIVELY DIFFERENT hormonal states associated with the different colors of star. We say stuff like "Day 3 is the hardest," or OMG, it was tough there for a while, but it's getting better now." For me, because this is my own system that I came up with, I like being able to say to myself, "OK, now I'm in Red," because I know exactly what that means. On the one hand, it's easier to abstain because the seminal pressure is so much less, on the other hand it's harder to abstain because one is so close to the memory of the tawdry pleasure of MB, and one's habit is freshly broken, fragile, and still not repaired.
Being in GOLD inevitably means I'm getting GREAT CREATIVE WORK DONE. And it isn't HARD not to MB, because I'm so INTO doing what I'm doing. And the HABIT of NOMB is strong. But then, one "jumps the shark" into PRIDE at some point, and thinks: "I've broken the habit, I'll never MB again, I can start amusing myself by fantasizing again!"
AND WE ALL KNOW WHERE THAT LEADS!!!

I love the vocab here, "t-buzz," etc. As a poet, I can only get any GOOD poetic work done when "the Muse returns" and I can FEEL the motion of the poetry. The Muse DEFINITELY IS OFFENDED AND LEAVES when I MB. So the return also is a very palpable experience that generally happens around day 10, HENCE THE GOLD STAR. What happens is that I can feel the "large" rhythms of poetry (so different than the "small" rhythms of MB!) and FEEL THEM SO STRONGLY, that I can make other people feel them. And that's when poetry is good! (Or, now that I'm directing, I have to be able to make my CAST feel them so strongly, they can make the audience feel them, another wrinkle, an even stronger motivation for AB!)

(Yes, I am an Eagle Scout, and a Sunday-school going Presbyterian, in case you can't tell! And I have friends in AA who treasure their sober-days coins!)

3) For work-outs, for any calender week, beginning Monday, you get to put up:
Work-Out #1 Red Star
Work-Out #2 Silver Star
Work-Out #3 Blue Star
Work-Out #4 or more, Gold Star

My work-out is pretty minimal, just a good stretch, 30 min run/swim/bike, and some light fooling with the weights. If I'm feeling frisky, I'll calculate and post my COOPER POINTS as well. I know some people who are more serious about PE than I am keep more detailed schedules of exactly what reps, what weights, what muscle groups they exercise. But what I'm serious about is philology, which means I spend my time getting from 50,000 flash cards to 100,000!

One of the things I've learned is that if I feel ESPECIALLY HEAVY before going to church, like I reallly don't want to go, then I will feel a lot better once I've gone.

after nightmare of mice crawling on my balls. in my pants, shirt, everywhere.
about the size of half a golf ball, brown hair, if I grabbed a single one I could crush it, and did crush several, but when I grabbed a handful, they were to squirmya nd tough to crush. I bit the heaads of of some, yuck, then rsorted to stabbing them all to death with fork. Woke up hot and bothered, but am managing to calm down now, enough to go back to sleep. OH WHAT FUN!
