Have you ever had surgery for a (direct inguinal) hernia? If so, for how long were you "out of commission"?

I'm gonna have to go soon, but forgot to ask the surgeon for how long I will be out action.

Yep had a hernia here.

Depends what u mean "out of action". I guess u dont feel like doing much for a week or two as it can be a bit painful. But i guess everone is different when it comes to recovery. For the first couple of days it does seem that you get around like a old man - but funny really.

Make sure u get some pain medican from doc as that will help.

i had a double hernia but i dont have a clue what type and i dont remember much about it other than huge scars in the pubic area that i can still see if i look thru the jungle. i was only like 6 years old so i dont really remember how long recovery took. sorry i couldnt help.

well if you got pubes you wont see them after they grow back cuz u will get shaved if your not already.

I had a hernia operation a few years; mesh was inserted, the cut was close to the a crease in my skin and is not visible now, There was no visible shaving at the time. Since then I've had a further operation on a hydro-cell on my left spermatic cord, the cut was a very small wound again in a crease, i cannot find either wound now. I was advised in both cases not to shave as shaving scratches the skin and can cause infections. For the hernia operation a cute young nurse use a dispoable razor to remove a small amount of hair.No hair was cut for the second operation.

what causes hernia? The inguinial. How painful? Can you describe the pain? And then, where exactly the pain located? I'm curious since I do have some aches in my balls sometimes.

Liarize asks cause of inguinal hernia. Suggest you look up on web. It's quite common, some male babies even born with it, and kids develop it too. Weaknesses in abdominal wall allow intestine to move down channel into scrotum. The channel is on both sides of penis, it's the place your balls go when they go tight just before ejac. In some guys, they near enough disappear right up there, and come down again after orgasm is over. Inguinal hernia in adults is usually caused by lifting heavy weights in wrong way, with feet apart instead of bending knees and using back. 'Sore balls' is not usually a sign of having inguinal hernia: if you have it, you will know! Hope that takes weight off your mind

Liarize asked about painful balls which leads into a question I've been considering for some time. How do you know the difference between the ache/pain you get from blue balls and the pain/ache you get from testicular torsion?

My take on the question, Eleazer, is that the ache from 'blue balls' is not severe, although it can't be ignored. It disappears right after MB (or, we all hope, WD . In case of testicular torsion, commonly known as twisted balls, the pain is constant. It is a serious condition, calling for medical intervention as a matter of urgency. Left untreated, it can cause lasting damage to seminal vesicles. Same goes for a bad 'kick in the nuts' sustained in sport or by accident, such as falling on the groin when skateboarding. I too had an inguinal hernia at age 7,left side.of course the Dr joked that "Hope I don't slip and you wake up as a girl"..nice guy.
Hurt bad first couple days but got better after that,I was out of school for I think 2 weeks.Scar is barely visible under the brush if one looks close enough.

I had a bi-lateral inguinal hernia repair two and a half weeks ago, it was done by laproscopic (keyhole surgery) I can certainly recommend it its done under a general anaesthetic three small 1/4 inch incisions heals very quickly and is a little uncomfortable for a day or two but nothing major Usually done as a day case sometimes an overnight stay depending how late in the day you have your operation. I was given the choice of Keyhole or open surgery. Open surgery is apparently fare more painful than keyhole and they will only do one side at a time requiring two hospital admissions to general anaesthetics. two bouts of painful extended recovery time.

Keyhole both sides can be done at the same time far less painful procedure quick recovery time minimal scarring. If you have a hernia go and see your doctor and get yourself booked into the hospital for surgery. The sooner the hernia/s are repaired the less complex the operation is and quicker recovery time. Also if they are quite large long standing hernia's keyhole may not be an option.

You certainly don't realise how much a hernia affects you until you have it repaired, no more dull ache and dragging feeling Certainly very pleased to have had the surgery done
