Polygamy exists, and it's supposed to be against the law. Strange law, though. If a guy shacks up with a bunch of women, it's not breaking the law, but once someone comes along and "proports to marry" (the language of the Texas marriage law) more than one of them to the guy, it's illegal.
Funny. You'd think at the VERY MOST it would just not be defined as marriage as far as the governmental definition of "household" goes (used for census, taxes, and other procedural stuff).

NOTE: I know they didn't really raid the FLDS place for the polygamy, but more for the children and aligations of child abuse. I have no qualms about that (assuming there really was child abuse going on) But still. ANTI-polygamy laws seem a little dumb when all you have to do is "not marry them". (??!!)

You're right. The law will just force people to live as man-and-wife, but not marry legally. It happens in some Muslim households too.

In my opinion, government should just get out of the marriage endorsement business.

imo the government should get out of a lot of things, unfortunately the nutcases in charge are going the opposite direction.
