I have a heavy tendency to lean towards justifying myself by the law rather than by grace. I have a hard time living by grace and not defiling it with justified sins, Masturbation specifically. Is anyone else like that and How do you keep the appropriate balance between law and grace?

Interesting question. Can you explain to us what exactly you mean? We all have different understandings of law (which law?), grace and justification. And not all of us believe in these concepts.

Living by the law or works. Christians are saved by grace no the law. Law lived out in culture is being that good Christian that appears perfect. When I get in a law based state of mind, my actions become my salvation so I have to be good and perfect all of the time. Does that help?

For me I live by grace. It is extremely encouraging to believe in a loving, generous and empowering Christ. To live by the law alone feels to me as putting oneself in a contained room, your hands clasped unable to receive the abundance from the Lord. It can be isolating and exhausting and you would be busy attempting to make yourself righteous.

I believe in law, not grace. Law, as in laws, courts haha. Not divine law or grace. Niether of those would make sense to me, as I do not believe in god. 'God' is itself only a human construct created originally to explain and provide reason for that which we cannot understand. It is natural to fear the unknown, and death, and god filled that fear. Unfortunately, the universe truly IS random and unpredictable, minus science of course, and even morality is a human construct. That being said, it has been proven psychologically that 'belief', in anything, is good for you. As for me I believe in science, if that makes sense. Observation and experimentation, not just belief. Religion has no basis upon which to prove itself, and so I must ignore and think it as false.

I'm not saying that religion is bad, and I acknowledge that religion has done many good things for society, but religion in itself was not the needed factor, but the way in which it encouraged people to be good. All the extra things in it, such as how to live your life, masturbation being a sin, not to eat pork(muslim) is unnecessary. Plus t bible, for example, was written by many individuals, and so has many contradictions in it. The overall goal of religions in the past was to bring people together, make them obey, and subjugate them. These things no longer happen. The percentage of people who believe in god decreases every year, and I believe that religion is just a phase that all civilizations pass through, until science takes the upper hand.

Phew, sorry for the long post, but my overall point is that belief is good for you, and that it is your choice on what to believe in. I don't go the religious route, but it is just as valid as going my science route. I can jack off whenever I want and not feel guilty, but I am also vegetarian by my own choice.

@Steath- Sin is just a concept, and you as such you can define it to be whatever you like! Don't go by what one book says, choose for yourself. For example, I think that killing another human being is wrong, not a sin, I don't like that word because of its religious denotation. God, a concept, is not capable of condeming you, therefore sin cannot exist. Only you and others can condem you. If YOU think jacking off is truly wrong, then don't do it, else just enjoy the completely natural release of endorphins and oxytocin that accompanies a release of sexual tension, haha.
