Yes it is against the teachings of the Church. Read "Theology of the Body" there is a short version by Christopher West. It is eye opening and will answer many questions, it did for me.

What I mean is so many cultural Catholics get it wrong (I don't think the official church teaching is wrong, especially now, it's just the 'I was raised Catholic' types who really just went to church a few times a year but never got it or never really gave their heart and life to Christ), and nominal Protestants, too--salvation isn't about how many good or bad things you have done--all of us are justly condemned because all of us are sinners--it doesn't matter the specific sins, this one or that--we all sin. And sin repeatedly. There are natural consequences to sins in this life, and that may vary depending on the sin--if you steal, you might get caught and the "unjust and cruel" police will put you in jail or fine you. Oh, wait, that's not unjust? Oh, stealing is bad because that's not your property. People had to work and pay for such items. Well, same with the God who created and loves everything he created, including us--when we sin, it's not crossing some arbitrary line that someone drew in the sand--it's violating love and common sense. Look at just the "10 Commandments"--how are those not common sense? How is it not wrong if someone breaks one of those commands? The laws of your city, county, state and nation, are much more complex, and probably much more debatable. But must of us don't complain about them or say they are wrong and unjust. And yet as soon as we hear a command coming from the Bible, people get all up in arms, like all of a sudden common sense, love and decency are horrible and how can a religion teach that and oh, they are so judgmental, and mocking ask, "wow, am I going to hell now," etc., etc. It's not even logical.

But back to the hell comment--when God judges us rightly at the end of time, our salvation isn't based on some checklist of sins (or good works)--it's based on our relationship (or lack thereof) with His Son, the only holy Lamb of God, the one who died to take that very result of eternal death away from us. See, God is motivated by love, not judgement. "He who knew no sin [Jesus] became sin, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" and "God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance"--does that sound like a God (or faith) that is bent on condemning people? So, what does it mean to "repent"? Literally, to "turn around." Not to just "stop sinning"--like we could ever become righteous on our own anyway... To repent means to turn around from our own self-centered and sometimes foolish ways of doing things and to turn to God, our designer, and right ways, instead. It means to turn away from focusing on self and money and fame and pride and lust and anger and mediocrity and hatred and turn to God, who is love and peace and joy and grace and excitement and productiveness and creativity and beauty and strength and all that is good. We don't get "sent to hell" so much as we chose to go there. When we focus and walk towards the darkness in life, we are ourselves walking away from God and into a type of hell, because as I understand it, hell is defined as a place where God and all that he stands for, is not. We choose our own hell, whether it be addiction or selfishness or violence or fear or hard-heartedness or whatever.
