As some off you have read on my post i'm kind new to this. But as a student o science, microbiology more specifically and very interested in health problems i would like talk just a bit about something some men forget.
I believe most of you know what i'm going to say, but since when i spoke to some friends of mine they didn't know about this, here i go:

Testicle cancer and related diseases are very common during the ages of 15 to 40. An earlier treatment is needed to a full recovery and the cure exist in that cases without much injury. I became further aware of this matter since last year i, after being diagnose with an orchitis on my left testicle and after the treatment, a cyst was found in my left epididymis and had to be removed by surgery. Fortunately it was benign and so no worries. Still, it made me more aware of the need of doing regular check ups on your testicles.
I know that maybe this is hard considering a policy of no touching. But the procedure can be done in about 2 minutes. So think in your health.
What do you need to do?

1) Make sure your testicles are hanging (after a hot shower for example)

2) Put your hands beneath your testicles and fell the weight of them (one shall be heavier than the other, it's normal)

3) Touch each one of your balls and roll your fingers on your testicle. Fell the oval and smooth surface of each testicle. Do that for each testicle and try to find any abnormality. As said, the surface of the testicles is smooth to touch. If you feel any lump go to your doctor ASAP. BTW, the 2 "lumps" in the top and bottom of your testicles are the beginning of your epididymis. So no worries.

4) If everything is ok, check again in about 1 month

Remember guys, a regular check up on your testicle might save your life and your precious balls

Good advice, and from 40, get your prostate checked annually.
Best is to get an annual ultrasound of prostate and balls, that allows them to look inside, rather than just feeling the surface of your most treasured glands.
You check your engine oil at least once a year, make sure you check your important kit as well. You can't replace it.

Yah, boxer is right. I know, the prostate exam is not the nicest one, but very important after the 40 yo. And consulting an urologist is important in the case of doubt. He was the doctor who treat both the orchitis and my cyst. So don't feel embarace to go and show your material. Be sure he has seen plenty.
And, any illness like these, if catch in time, are somehow treated with much success, even cancer.

Boxer, never heard of an ultrasound for prostate and testicles before. Is that common? I have this discussion with my MD every year during the annual physical. He checks my testicles and does the DRE for the prostate, but has advised: he's only able to examine one surface of the prostate. It's entirely possible there could be a problem in an area his finger can't reach, and we'd never know. Also, the PSA test is wildly inaccurate. So even though I've always had decent results, no longer do that one.

The ultrasound sounds very intriguing, and possible a way to get a more complete picture. Have you had it done yourself?

I know i'm not boxer and i'm much younger but have a decent amount of knowledge of that.

Considering ultrasound for testicles, it must be one of the best ways to visualise them and determine their health. Also, since there's no radiation involved, it's a very safe technique. Maybe the only down side is the pressure some technicians apply on the testicles. That can hurt a little. Due to my testicle surgery, because of my cyst, i've been doing regular check ups on my testicles with my doctor, not only with palpation but also with ultrasound images, to check if everything healed well and that everything is on good health.

For the prostate exam, never did, only 21 yo.
And it's true, that primary approach can only tell the doctor if the prostate is swelled or not. It's called the douglas sac (believe it's like that). It's the pressure your prostate causes on your intestine that is determine. If very swollen, the prostate is more noticeable on your intestine. But, normally in older men, the prostate tends to swell a bit, and that does not mean the prostate is sick. Is something that ageing brings (sorry about that).
The PSA exam is also only a preliminary exam as you said. It's only the measure of a certain protein found in blood, and was found a correlation between it's amount and a possible cancerous problem. It's a normal protein that promotes cellular function, but if much increased might lead to serious problems, not only prostate cancer. A good way to determine the shape and health of the prostate is doing and CT scan, or better yet an MRI, since the last has a better resolution than the first. Both methods carries radiation risks that some doctors consider more relevant than others. Also, those exams are a little bit expensive. But you can ask your doctor about that. Maybe there's even a better exam. This is what i know!

I had a testicular ultrasound a few months ago when I was diagnosed with a Varicocele (look it up on wikipedia) and the detail was astonishing. Almost as if your sac was transparent...

The worst part was still being covered in K-Y after the scan. I bit of tissue does not do the job and I had to drive home with distinctly slimy and sticky tackle!

Two types of prostate ultrasound. Standard one is done through your abdomen with the wand. They usually check your other internal organs as well. Same wand used for your balls. I was covered in a lot of gel and did not find the pressure uncomfortable. FutureWDer, the discomfort was probably due to the condition of your testicles. All this takes about 10 mins only. I keep my abdomen and equipment shaved, which made cleaning up all the gel much easier. If you have a lot of hair, you might need a shower afterwards.

The other form of prostate ultrasound is called TRUS - Trans Rectal Ultra Sound. Here they use a probe inserted into your anus. It is much better at measuring the size of your prostate and tends to be used for more accurate readings of prostate volume if the doc has already detected some abnormalities or enlargement. Never has this one personally.

Personally, I don't like to rely solely on DRE (finger up the anus) as this has been shown to miss a lot of problems. There are statistical studies on this, due to variability in doctor experience, length of finger, distance of prostate inside the patient etc. etc. it's only 60% accurate.

Hey Versa14fun,
I have my all my internal organs, including prostate and testicles ultrasound scanned every year as part of my medical routine. All the usual blood tests and ECG are done too, so this is at my request.
I have not had a TRUS as it's not necessary, just the standard abdominal and scrotal scans.
It very interesting to watch on the screen. If you are not shy and interested, the radiologist usually gives me a guided tour of my organs. It's fascinating to see inside your scrotum and testicles and to see all the delicate structures. The body is amazing.

Yes I do exams every few weeks. Had a scare as a teenager and had to have a couple of ultra sounds. Not good for a teenage guy!! Trust me.

Not hard to do and since there is a link posted I though I would post this one. WARNING it is a medical show so a LIVE MALE being examined. IF you don't want to see male nudity please don't visit site. But I guess your here so you wont mind to much!! LOL

But its not hard to do and I think all guys should regularly do a self exam. Its not as if we don't play with our nad's for other purposes!!!
