As far as the anatomy of WD, I am reading a book which deals with all types of addictions and have discovered/rediscovered some interesting information.
The hormones released during MB or sex are mostly the same as those associated with any other addiction including food, gambling, drugs, and alcohol. This explains why the urge to MB is often highest when stressed, tired, having a headache, feeling alone or unloved, etc.
It makes me wonder if seeking another pleasure source such as "comfort food," chocolate, sunshine, exercise, and even beautiful music would reduce the urge to MB in many situations.
In addition to dopamine and endorphins, serotonin is a major factor in brain activity when engaging in addictive behavior. All the above listed triggers, in addition to sex, are related to serotonin and dopamine releases.
This could explain why exercise, besides being a distraction, seems to help curb the need to MB even while increasing horniness. Or why stress and being alone are two of the most commonly cited trigger moods for MB.
I have intentionally increased my time in the sun over the last few days and plan to experiment with music and chocolate as well when tempted to MB.
A word of caution: MBing more than once or twice after a period of AB (splurging) sends even stronger pleasure reinforcement than habitual but not excessive MB. The same is probably true with any other pleasure source so don't overindulge in any one source.
Fighting the temptation to overindulge in anything will probably be easier and more effective by getting a little sunshine, some good food and/or chocolate, some exercise, social interaction or any combination rather than focusing on one source.
