NOCTURNAL EMISSION AND MASTURBATORY FREQUENCY RELATIONSHIPS: A 19TH-CENTURY ACCOUNT

One of the most curious collections of statistics on human sexuality from the
19th century is the record of masturbation, nocturnal emission, and occasional
sexual intercourse kept from 1852 to 1858 by Philip C. Van Buskirk of the
United States Marines (Van Buskirk, 1851-1858). Van Buskirk entered the
Marine Corps as a 13-year-old drummer boy in 1846 and was discharged over a
decade later as a noncommissioned officer. Like so many other young men 150
years ago, he was tormented by fears of the consequences that would result
from masturbation and nocturnal emission. He studied the few medical books
that were available aboard ship and learned that masturbation and nocturnal
emission had dire results. Among other things, they sapped one's strength,
caused innumerable degenerative conditions, were symptoms of moral decay,
could prohibit his ever marrying or siring children, and would, in all probabili-
ty, bring about senility and premature death

Interesting article - I had read that one a while back when doing WD research. Thanks for posting it!

I found this quote near the end the most telling:

"His frequencies of masturbation and other sources of orgasm when related to
his incidence of nocturnal emission replicate the findings of Kinsey et al. and
Winokur et al. (1959). Both found that there is no close connection between the
two.

A big OUCH to the abstinence theory there!

If you look at the document, there is indeed a rough negative correlation between his MB rate and his WD rate. Another thing to note is that his MB rate was always low, roughly twice a month or less.

We have seen in members here that guys whose normal MB rate is less than once a week or two tend to also get WD's. It is the guys who MB on average once a day or more who get very few WD's, if any at all. When those guys abstain long enough, most of them get WD's. If they continue to abstain, they get more WD's. If they go back to MB, the WD's stop.

Our experiences with members here is just as valid as the diary of someone whose MB rate (when he MB'd at all) was much lower than average.

It is pretty interesting. I don't agree that it says much about the abstinence theory, though. Texanguy is right, it just proves that going from a very low mb rate to a 0 mb rate might not increase wd's. But going from a high mb rate to 0 definitely seems to increase wd's.

I think one of the problems is that there doesn't seem to be enough formal studies like this being done.

pure poppycock they are absolutely interrelated. Although you can have wd if you have sexual dreams. The odds of having a wd with no dream is almost nil. I have been studying wd for over 2 yrs.

Not to revive a zombie thread but, I just read that study. In Kinsey data even the people that were averaging MB'ing more than once a week were still having WD's. Granted I was probably more like 7 not 1 through my mid-20's but I still never had one! I wonder if that bodes poorly for me.
