I finally got around to installing a new chat room to our forum. It's based on phpFreeChat, and it seems to work very well. It's got the similar smilies to MSN Messenger, and its easy to use with plenty of features. I think it can even use private messages if you want to chat with someone else on the side not viewable to the main chat users, but I haven't tried it yet.
It is also interfaced with the username and password of the main forum, so this means if you are already logged in to the forum, it will log you into the chat with your username. If you are not logged in to the forum, if you click on the link, it will bring you to the log in screen for the forum, then you will need to re-enter the chat room by clicking on the chat room link again. If you're not registered on the forum, you won't be able to use the chat room.
The link to the chat room is on the upper right part of the screen of the forum, next to the search and FAQ links.

The chat room seems to be working well. I think a lot of people are frustrated when no one else is in the room when they are there. This will be a common problem as we're not that big of a group. One suggestion is people who want to chat should post what time they will be in the chat room, and then people can join the chat if they want to if the time is convenient for them. Be sure to include your time zone too, as we have members from all around the world here. You can post it here, or start a new thread in the main forum.
The private chat feature works well too - to private chat with someone, just click on the user's name on the right side of the screen and select private message and it will open a new tab with a private chat window that no one else can see.

OK, here is how to create a private chat channel with multiple people in it:
AFter logging into the chat room:
- Create a new private channel by typing: /join channelname
You can call the channel whatever you want - I just used channelname in the example above
This will create a new tab with your new private channel. Only you can see it until you invite someone, and only those people you invited will know it is there, just like the private message function.
- Next, invite your friends you want to chat privately with, one at a time by typing: /invite friend1 channelname
/invite friend2 channelname
/invite friend3 channelname
etc.
For example, to invite me (focus) to the private channel "demo" that you already created, you would type: /invite focus demo
Hope this helps. If you forget the list of chat commands, type /help, and it will list them all on the bottom.
